COBRA COEFFICIENT COBRA ASSUMPTIONS COBRA DATA

The COBRA Coefficient  is an indicator of change.

The DATA page shows the 10 economic factors which combine to create the index, their base values and their latest values. These are updated weekly. When sufficient data has been gathered, the movements will be charted.

Four of the factors change constantly - oil price, FTSE100, £/$ and £/€ - and their values are recorded at each Friday's close. The House Price Index, Retail Sales, Base Rate and CPI (inflation) are updated monthly. Apart from Base Rate which takes effect immediately, the others are lagged. Thus the values available in Week 4 for House Prices relate to November 08; for Retail Sales and CPI to December 08.
Unemployment and vacancy figures published 21/1/2009 relate to September-November 2008.

All factors are given equal weighting. Some organisations will need their own COBRA coefficient with different weightings and additional components to emphasise the factors that particularly affect them.

The COBRA Coefficient will be published on a consistent basis throughout 2009.
